For my husbands birthday, I wanted to take him on an weekend adventure through the beautiful wilds of Florida. While researching on where to go I discovered that tucked away on Beautiful Lido Key, Florida there is a natural wonder called the Mangrove Caves.
The mangrove caves- are not really caves in the traditional sense of the word, but rather cave like tunnels formed out of mangrove trees.
The cave like tunnels were actually trenches dug to control mosquitoes and help curb yellow fever from spreading.
Time and tidal waves ultimately took over, and the winding whorls of texture from the roots of the mangrove trees create a backdrop for adventure.
I booked our kayaking tour with Almost Heaven Kayak Adventures. They were very fast at returning my call and were so incredibly helpful in explaining what the tour would be like. I totally recommend them. The tour lasts about 2 1/2 hours and you will learn all about Florida's wildlife and possibly see a manatee or a dolphin in the wild.
Here are some tips and a small list of items I recommend you bring when you venture out on your kayaking expedition.
1. Wear a swimsuit or clothes you don't mind getting wet in.
2. SUNSCREEN!!!! Apply everywhere cause you will be getting double exposure from the sun and the reflection of the sun bouncing off the water.
3. WATER! two and a 1/2 hrs in the hot sun is a long time to kayak without some. I recommend about two 16oz bottles per person.
4.If your phone is not in a 'Life Proof" case then make sure you have it in a 'DRY' bag. My husband got his Iphone wet and had to get a brand new phone cause it was damaged beyond repair.
5. Do not bring your expensive camera unless you have a dry bag for it. I ended up not bringing my Nikon with me into the Kayak. Sorry the pictures are a little grainy My IPhone was all I had during this adventure.
6. Wear a hat and have a pair of CHEAP sunglasses. I one time lost a beautiful pair of Kate Spade sunglasses in the ocean and vowed to NEVER wear anything over $20 bucks in the ocean.
7. CASH...something I never seem to carry. lol. Its a really nice thing to tip your tour guide.
Are you ready?! Let's go kayaking through the Mangrove Caves on beautiful Lido Key, Florida!!
Love, Sem xoxo
