For many years I wanted my very own herb garden. I love cooking with lots of fresh organic herbs. Having an herb garden, saves you money, gives your food fresh flavors, and is a great way to connect with nature.

My sweet father-in-law, Jim ( a well renowned gardener and Gator fan) built me my very own herb garden in my backyard as a gift last spring.

This past year, I've learned a lot about gardening from my father-in-law and through trial and error.

Herb gardens are easy to start, and before long you too will have an array of fresh herbs to choose from.

They don't need much space either, so you can start with just a few pots or build a garden box like I did.

Here is a great video to get you started.

In my garden I planted the following herbs:

Italian Parsley

Curly Parsley

Sage

Rosemary

Thyme

Oregano

Basil

Mint

Here are some helpful tips I've learned so far!

Gardening tips

1. Make sure you plant your garden where there is a lot of sun. Most herbs are sunbathers.

2. If you choose to grow mint, grow it in a separate pot. If you don't, your WHOLE garden box becomes a mint field. I learned this the hard way.

3. Harvest herbs in the morning on a sunny day. I picked this tip up from a farmer I met at the Winter Garden Farmers Market.

4. Only use organic soil and try to find alternative ways to fend off bugs. Never use Round Up!

5. Collect herbs for cooking before the plant has a chance to flower. This will ensure that your herbs have the most flavor.

6. Dry your own herbs and crush them for easy storage and use year round.

7. Look for a local place to sell your herbs or give them out to friends. Just another great way to make a little money and have a sense of accomplishment.

8. Always harvest your herbs in heels LOL....J/K Running around with your heels in the grass is a work out. I don't recommend it.

Growing Herbs has been a surprising journey. I have a connection with the earth that I never had before. I rediscovered how fun it is to get your hands dirty like I did as a kid. It takes me back to my summers spent running through the pine filled forests of the Northwest.

Through gardening, I have learned to be more patient and enjoy the process of growing.

As with all things, there is a life cycle with gardening. It is truly fulfilling to see, feel and be a part of nature.

Love, Sem xoxo
